Our logo’s 4 colors represent the nexus of land, water, air, and food.

The foundational system upon which human survival depends is based on land, water, air, and food. This is the challenge for data-driven AgTech: to offer new insights into how these interconnected resources can be managed to benefit humanity. Thus begins the origin story of Athena Intelligence, represented by the four colors in its logo.

Over a decade ago, the founder of Athena Intelligence began using machine learning focused on these four elements to help food processors with forward contracting in the face of drought and climate change.

Data scientists in agriculture understand that to optimize harvests, one must grasp the dynamic interplay of land, water, air, and food. These four elements drive and sustain agriculture. Land provides terrain and nutrients; water enables transport and metabolic function; air delivers carbon and moderates temperature; and food is the outcome, shaped by how these forces are managed.

Modern technology (including satellite imagery, weather models, soil sensors, and crop analytics) gives farmers the power to fine-tune growing conditions with precision, enhancing yields, conserving resources, and adapting to climate variability.

There is as much data generated around every acre of land as there is around an individual consumer. But most of this data is difficult to use in its raw form. Athena’s origins lie in making this data accessible and actionable for business. Think of the Voice of the Acre® as BI, or a search engine, for vast amounts of environmental data.

A core belief, at Athena Intelligence, is that only a fraction of the data that has been collected is effectively used in day-to-day economic decision-making. Utilities, for example, do not show bond holders or insurance companies the positive impact of their mitigation investments. Businesses and communities rarely understand how to quantify their risk based on the conditions of the terrain.

We tie geospatially specific environmental data to balance sheets and pricing, in a highly quantified and statistically rigorous manner. Each 30 sq meter pixel is independently analyzed and given a unique alphanumeric identifier, a cusip for the location, if you will.

From AgTech to FireTech

In an era of accelerating climate change, Athena’s management recognized a darker symmetry: wildfires are harvest events too. But instead of crops, what is harvested is fuel — the accumulated biomass of unmanaged vegetation, drought-stressed forests, and overgrown landscapes.

Wildfires consume what water, air, and soil once supported, and the damage extends far beyond the burn. They destroy watersheds and challenge drinking water supplies. Smoke carries fine particles that harm public health — not just in those with asthma, but also by exacerbating heart disease and accelerating cognitive decline. While property damage and business disruption are the most visible impacts, they represent only a portion of the total loss caused by catastrophic wildfire.

Athena’s Pre-Wildfire Intelligence

Athena Intelligence has redeployed the same advanced algorithms once used to forecast agricultural yields to now predict where wildfires are most likely to occur. A study of over 100,000 ignition events revealed that only 1 in 16 became a significant wildfire. Athena’s mission is to help you know which ones, a full year in advance, so you have time to mitigate before disaster strikes.

Athena was built to show both how large and where these disasters are likely to occur. In this view, wildfire prediction isn’t a matter of early detection — it’s a data problem. And one that can be solved through strategic mitigation and planning. Mitigation costs 5% of the cost of fighting a wildfire and significantly less than 1% of the total losses associated with a catastrophic fire.

Athena Intelligence is a data vendor with a geospatial, conditional, profiling tool that pulls together vast amounts of disaggregated wildfire and environmental data to generate spatial intelligence, resulting in a digital fingerprint of wildfire risk.

Clients include financial services companies, insurance, electric utilities, communities and homeowners' associations (HOAs). Athena’s geospatial intelligence is incorporated into multiple products that can be accessed through an online portal. Athena’s data is currently used in wildfire mitigation plans (WMP) and public safety power shutoffs (PSPS), Community Wildfire Protection Plans (CWPP), property insurance underwriting and portfolio risk optimization.
