Smokey Bear turns 81 this week

The face of the U.S. Forest Service’s fire prevention campaign was introduced in 1944. Smokey has become one of America’s most enduring public figures. His timeless message, Only You Can Prevent Wildfires, is still one of the most recognizable public service announcements in U.S. history.
And it’s never been more necessary.
In an era of rising temperatures, prolonged droughts, and record-breaking wildfire seasons, the message of personal and community responsibility has expanded, from campfires to power lines, from the deep forest to the edge of suburbia. What began as a warning to campers is now a call to action for utilities, insurers, homeowners, and municipal governments.
From Posters to Predictive Analytics
Smokey’s first poster debuted in 1944, during World War II, as part of the Cooperative Forest Fire Prevention campaign. The concern then was that forest fires would devastate timber supplies and divert emergency resources. Over the decades, Smokey evolved into the trusted face of wildfire awareness, reminding generations of Americans about the dangers of carelessness in nature.
Today, wildfire prevention has become more complex, as most damaging fires now occur in the Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI). These are not isolated forest blazes, but fast-moving events that threaten entire communities, utility infrastructure, and public health across state lines.
Yet Smokey’s core message endures: preventing wildfires still starts with understanding, and reducing, human-caused ignition.

Ignition events are usually human caused, but the locations are also random. The land is, in some places, predisposed to large fires, like a hidden landmine. Athena “sniffs” these wildfire landmines out for the upcoming 12 months.
Athena’s geospatial analysis identifies the environmental conditions most likely to support large-scale fire, often up to a year in advance. Utilities can use it to plan hardening projects. Smart insurers can use it to underwrite in areas others fear. Cities and HOAs can use it to prioritize fuels management and prepare for funding and mitigation.
We still believe that one spark can destroy a forest. But a study of over 100,000 ignitions spread over a decade and many states found 1 out of 16 caused a large catastrophic fire. Athena knows the problematic areas are for a spark, and that information can prevent it from turning into catastrophe.
What’s Changed — and What Hasn’t
In 2025, more than 80% of wildfires in the U.S. are still caused by human activity. But unlike in 1944, ignition can now come from:
- A catalytic converter parked on dry grass
- A spark from aging utility infrastructure during high wind events
- Construction equipment on public lands
- An ember from a BBQ landing on a wood deck
