Wildfire Hazard Potential
Will this wildfire get out of control?
The Wildfire Hazard Potential is an index that quantifies the potential for wildfire to be difficult to control. Each layer of data within Athena’s model has its unique index values and classes as determined by the USDA, US Forrest Service through research conducted at the Rocky Mountain Research Station.
Each data point, or pixel, represents a 30x30 sq meter area (about 10,000 sq ft or 1/4 of an acre). This pixel has a unique alpha-numberic identifier, from which a time series can be computed on and which is tracable to all the underlying raw data points.
For the wildfire module, this data point is incorporated with all the pixels within 5 miles of the location, with heavier weightings for 2 miles and 1,000 meters. But embers from a fire can move quickly, and some flavors of wildfires create their own wind and weather — so everything within 5 miles of a location needs to be considered to fully understand the Wildfire Hazard Potential.
The WHP is not unique to Athena Intelligence, how we use the information is different from other in the wildfire risk industry. These rating come from Wildfire Risk to Communities: Spatial datasets of landscape-wide wildfire risk components for the United States. Fort Collins, CO: Forest Service Research Data Archive. Updated 25 November 2020. The authors are Joe Scott, Julie Gilbertson-Day, Christopher Moran, Greg Dillon, Karen Short and Kevin Vogler.
Again, as the data is processed through Athena’s models, a Yellow, Orange, Red or Purple Flag is assigned to each layer indicating the risk level associated with the specific layer that exists with the potential of contributing to a greater than 1% probability of a wildfire occurrence within the geospatial proximity of the property.
Athena is a next generation InsurTech data vendor which produces synthetic data. The earth’s essential data is refined to make it easy for enterprises to use environmental information for future contracts, proprietary business decisions and risk management.
